Custom Steam Desuperheater
Custom Desuperheater
Desuperheater – Unlike conventional desuperheaters, Komax uses a multiple-stage mixing system using the patented Komax Equalizer Mixing Module. The first stage of mixing occurs at the water injection point; the water is sprayed upstream of the flow using low-pressure full cone spray nozzles to adequately distribute the water across the cross-section. Small droplets are sheared to then even smaller sizes using the velocity from the steam blowing the sprayed water downstream toward the Equalizer. The second stage of mixing occurs at the Equalizer. The equalizer consists of 6 mixing chambers with a helical mixing element in each chamber, which leads to 12 divisions and instances of increased turbulence between the steam and water. Thus, further shearing the water droplets to be effectively absorbed into the steam line. The third and last stage of mixing occurs at the Equalizer outlet. This is where the 12 streams recombine to blend together and then complete the mixing and water absorption to be carried downstream to the next part of your process.

Product Benefits
The Desuperheater Creates Less Stress on Piping
Because of these mixing processes, we are able to significantly reduce the downstream requirements from approximately 30 pipe diameters to 10 pipe diameters before the temperature probe. The quick absorption of the water into the steam also greatly reduces the risk of stress in the piping due to thermal cycling, as water will not pool on the bottom of the pipeline. This removes the need for expensive thermal liners in the Komax Desuperheater, however, liners can be included in the design if desired.
- They assist in minimizing needless energy waste by transforming superheated steam into saturated or lower-temperature steam.
- Saturated steam is perfect for heating applications since it transfers heat more efficiently than superheated steam.
- Saturated or near-saturated steam works better for a variety of industrial processes and equipment, including heat exchangers, sterilizers, and turbines.
- Process uniformity improves product quality in sectors including power generation, food processing, and medicines by guaranteeing constant process conditions.
- Utilized in refineries, power plants, chemical processing, HVAC systems, and more.
- They can manage a broad range of steam pressures and flow rates, which makes them appropriate for a variety of operational requirements.
- Improves system performance overall, resulting in less fuel and pollutants.
- By carefully regulating the cooling process, water and energy are saved.
- With only minor adjustments, a large number of desuperheaters are small enough to be readily included into current steam systems.
- For real-time temperature adjustments, contemporary desuperheaters can be outfitted with automated controls.
Technical Specifications and Available Options for the Multi-Stage Mixing System
End Connection Options
- Flanged Ends: Flanged end connections allow for significantly easy mounting of the desuperheater into the process pipeline. As a general standard, metal desuperheaters have raised face flanges per ASME B16.5 or ASME B16.47 (for sizes larger than 24”) standards. Komax can also fabricate mixers to contain DIN (metric) flanges as well.
- Threaded Ends: Komax Systems offers male and female NPT end connections on desuperheaters as required.
- Weld Prep Ends: For custom configuration, Komax Systems offers weld prep end connections on Desuperheaters.
*All desuperheaters are made specifically per customer specification; end connection type can be made specifically per customer request.

Additional Product Details
Using three stages of mixing, including our patented Equalizer™ mixing module within the desuperheater. Cooling happens almost instantly as it exits the mixing module, thus it doesn’t require the extensive downstream pipe lay length required by old-school designs. In fact, it needs less space, delivers more accurate temperature control, and reduces or eliminates thermal cycling fatigue in your piping, ensuring improved safety, less wear, and downtime. This makes for quick and efficient absorption of water into the superheated steam line.
A desuperheater works by injecting a cold fluid (typically water) into a hot steam line to lower the temperature of the steam. The water that is injected typically is injected via a spray nozzle or in order to absorb into the steam line. Usually the water will be absorbed into the steam line within about 30 pipe diameters of length, but with the Komax Desuperheater, we can reduce this length to 10 diameters with the use of our Equalizer Mixing Module. The Equalizer shears the water droplets that are introduced into the steam line into a fine mist so the water is absorbed into the steam almost instantaneously.
A desuperheater can be used downstream of a boiler to reduce the steam temperature prior to being distributed to a user or process. It can also be used upstream of a turbine to reduce the temperature of the steam for safer operation for power generation. Our engineers will be able to help determine the best placement for your desuperheater within your process. Just fill out a form and we'll get your project started swiftly!
Desuperheaters lower the temperature of (or attemperate) a superheated steam line using a cooling water source (typically a boiler feedwater (BFW)). The superheated steam or gas is directly in contact with the cooling water or fluid. Desuperheating immediately begins the process of evaporation and absorption into the steam line. Typically, enough water will inject into the line to bring the steam temperature down to around Saturation (+/- 10°F ). However, the desuperheaters can be used to more moderately attemperate the steam to a specified final temperature if desired. This is possible because Komax desuperheaters can operate with a turndown range of up to 20:1 with proper pressure control.
