A desuperheater is most commonly used in a high heat generation plant, where saturated steam is much required. While superheated steam has its own purposes, saturated steam also has its own job. A steam heater is used to heat up steam while the desuperheater cools it down.

Desuperheaters are of two types
Indirect contact type desuperheater: In this type of desuperheater, the liquid used for cooling the superheated steam and the steam does not come into direct contact with each other.
In this case, a liquid cooler than the steam is usually employed as the cooling medium. Ambient air or water is a good example of the cooling medium. Indirect contact desuperheaters are classified as shell and tube heat exchangers.
Direct contact type desuperheater: In this type of desuperheater, the medium used to cool the superheated steam is in direct contact with the steam. In direct contact desupeheaters, both the steam and the cooling medium are in the same state, for example, water.
