Looking at waste products as part of the manufacturing process is nothing new. In fact, it is a top health and safety concern for those of us in the business. So is finding new (and preferably cheaper), sustainable sources of energy to keep our factory floors humming. Taking a good look at a situation where environmental decisions are coming home to roost can help us understand why we work so hard to keep it clean while not losing efficiency.
There is no question that China provides just such an example. Recent wildfires in California prompted some newscasters to announce that the air quality in some California cities were “on par with China.” For reference, the World Health Organization notes that sometimes Chinese citizens are breathing in smog deemed 50 times more toxic than recommended safe levels. Because officials are now trying to rapidly correct the smog that is destroying quality of life in many cities, they are responding fast and harshly, in many instances by simply shuttering the factories they pushed to produce in the first place. More than 7000 businesses have been labeled “messy and polluting” and are targeted for clean-up – or closure.
Polluted skies and filthy rivers are finally driving the government into action, and capacity shutdowns are estimated to close hundreds of thousands of much smaller enterprises, including the closing of many construction sites until further notice. This is an excellent warning for our own manufacturing practices, to examine where we can be both efficient and clean.
