Fuel drives our global economies. Viscous crude oil is valued because it is an important source of hydrocarbons. But transporting the crude from source to refinery is a real challenge, because existing pipelines were built for less viscous crudes. However, mixing crude oil into water with an emulsifier makes transporting smoother. Other processes, such as desalting crude oil in the refinery before it is sent downstream, are performed by mixing a demulsifier in the pipe and then emulsifying fresh water in an inline mixer. This is a critical process, since poor mixing can bring salt over in the crude or create poor separation.
The same is true for natural gas, which often has high concentrations of other components that make it unsuitable for use as a fuel. Conventional methods try to absorb these components in massive towers; but offshore platforms can’t afford this size.
