Humans can’t drink seawater. It’s just not possible. The problem, though, is that the freshwater supply on the planet is more abundant in some places than it is in others, and the need for freshwater increases regularly. In fact, the need for drinkable water is expected to hit more than 30 billion gallons a day in the next five years. Today, it’s just under 1,200 gallons. The number of desalination plants must increase quickly.
New Studies Are Coming
Just recently, South Korea and the UAE reached an agreement to carry out a study on how best to develop desalination plants for the Mideast. The UAE is easily one of the biggest markets for desalination, looking to develop more than $40 billion in desalination projects over the next five years. They are far from the only players involved, though. Australia is currently expanding its desalination technology, as is the United States. In fact, in the past year, the largest seawater desalination facility in the United States came on line in San Diego County. It can produce 56,000 acre-feet of water every year.
