A quick scan of the headlines on any given day will quickly tell you that there are some real dangers associated with farm slurry. The pits themselves represent a risk to people and animals alike, and the fumes are often heavier than air and could present health risks to those nearby. Despite those potential problems, though, many farmers around the world continue to use it.
Serious Benefits
One reason so many farmers use slurry is that it’s incredibly available. That’s certainly not the only reason farmers employ this useful material, though. It also comes with some very strong benefits. Study after study has shown that it can increase crop production in a massive way. One study found that it increased potato production by 30%. Brinjal production saw even greater gains in another study, with an increase of 103%. In higher concentrations, greater results are found.
Crops aren’t the only potential application. It also works well as a pond fertilizer. It has nutrients in it that not only feed the microplants that help keep the fish fed, but it can also be consumed by the fish directly.
It’s even being looked at as feed for animals. On an experimental basis, it has been shown to increase production, and that could mean big things for farmers looking for cheaper feed for animals.
Is It Worth It?
When used properly, slurry is certainly worth it for most farmers. While there are certainly risks involved, proper processing could help slow those risks.
Komax has developed a number of technologies to help farmers dealing with sludge, and we’ll continue to do so. We’re committed to the environment, and slurry processing is one way to help improve the environment and our natural resources in a very big way.
