An unfortunate reality of manufacturing is having to deal with the issue of corrosion. Whether storage tanks, equipment or pipelines, corrosion is a real concern, particularly if it will lead to exposure of dangerous chemicals, such as spillage into the water tables or other exposure to the community. Controlling corrosion, however, is much simpler than you might think.
Particularly in areas where power generation, chemical production or wastewater management is concerned, corrosion is a daily battle. Sometimes materials are so acidic that corrosion begins happening within only a few weeks of exposure! If you work with hazardous materials, then you simply must take a look at your pipes and equipment and determine if they are best suited to handle the materials flowing through them every day.
For processes that require direct acid injection, it is critical that all piping and equipment are up-to-date. For example, this process could seriously benefit both from an inline static mixer created lined with Teflon. The mixing process, happening right inside the pipeline and reducing the need for exposure to mechanical mixing units that are more easily corroded and costly to replace, is easier and cheaper with the use of an inline mixer.
Other options can prove costly in terms of money and safety. Neutralization tanks, for example, are expensive to maintain and even more dangerous when they corrode. An inline mixer, on the other hand, changes the game completely, as a Teflon-lined static mixer with injection port can completely eliminate the need for a standing neutralization tank – and eliminate the cost that goes along with maintaining them!
