Applications of Desuperheaters

Komax desuperheaters are put to a variety of applications in various industries. Komax has been manufacturing static mixers since 1973.

Static mixers are what they specialize in. Aside from static mixers, Komax also makes desuperheaters. This is a device used to reduce temperature of steam for a number of purposes in a manufacturing unit.

Some of the applications of desuperheaters are:

  • Power generation
  • Thinner pipe schedules
  • Process controllability
  • Protecting downstream equipment
  • Gas desuperheaters

Let’s look at each of these applications in detail.

Power generation

When boilers run on reduced load or at a high cycle, they produce steam at variable temperatures. Desuperheaters help the temperature stabilize and saturate. Different types of power generation machines use desuperheaters in various ways, but the purpose is the same – to cool down the temperature of the steam.

For instance, when surface condensers need to work most efficiently, they need to be given saturated steam.

This also prevents the stress caused by hot dry steam when it enters the pipe. Turbine systems also need cooler steam to be able tow work normally, and this is achieved by desuperheaters.

Thinner pipe schedules

When steam is cool, it requires thinner pipe schedules than what is needed by superheated steam. This reduces costs and also lowers lead times for valves, piping, controls, and other machinery either during maintenance or temporary shutdown.

Process controllability

Komax desuperheaters are a great help when it comes to controlling a number of production processes. If the temperature of the steam is not cool enough or keeps fluctuating the process may become difficult to manage. This, in turn, affects product quality, create safety issues, and also cost a lot in repairs and maintenance.

Protect downstream equipment

Desuperheaters help in the atomization of water droplets, and also its evaporation and mixing downstream. When the downstream mixing is thorough, it keeps the equipment from damage, while also boosting efficiency.

Gas desuperheaters

Although desuperheaters are usually meant for steam cooling, they may also be used for any other vapor. Komax has over four decades of expertise in designing gas desuperheaters.

These deuperheaters are not meant to cool steam, but to cool gases like air, natural gas, methanol, and toluene. Custom made desuperheaters are also available for mixing any kind of miscible or immiscible gases.

Regardless of the industry, desuperheaters can be used for steam and vapor cooling for the most efficient and controlled processes. Get in touch with Komax to discuss your desuperheater needs and get the right equipment for any purpose.
