Flocculation Process Using Static Mixers

There are two important variables that will be highlighted in this process: inline static mixers and flocculation.

Inline static mixers are devices that blend liquid mixtures with liquid products in the pipeline before the tank resulting in a well-mixed mixture prior to entering the tank. This is done without the need for mixing tank agitators thanks to Komax System’s patented triple-action mixing elements.

Flocculation is particle agglomeration that uses binding chemicals such as polymers. We can also interpret flocculation as a process of clumping destabilized particles into flocs. With a size, sedimentation and filtration can separate that.  Plainly said flocculation occurs as a result of a chemical reaction between the clay particles and another substance, typically saltwater.

Can Static Mixers Be Used in Wastewater Treatment?

Based on the definition above, they can use a static mixer in wastewater treatment. The type of static mixer that is often used is the Wastewater static mixer. In addition to paying attention to the type of mixer, so that flocculation of wastewater is successful, you need to pay attention to a number of conditions.

Conditions to be Aware of During Wastewater Treatment

First, pay attention to the content and type of solids. They may not be too large, so they can fit into the mixer. You can use inline static mixers for organic sludge with solid concentrations of less than 0.5%.

Second, consider the polymer concentration. It must treat the polymer with a dose of less than 0.05% polymers. Doses of polymers at high concentrations are not conducive to producing good mixtures. If the viscosity of the polymer is too thick, it will not allow the distribution of good polymers in the flow. It is important to note that particle agglomeration is efficient and comprehensive.

Also, note the speed of the liquid in the mixer. The average velocity of the liquid in the mixer must be greater than 0.8 m/s. Slow flow rates are better in the flocculation process so that more elements can be placed in the mixer.

In conclusion, the process of flocculation aims to reduce the level of turbidity and to get clear water. With flocculation, it can remove suspended substances as pollutants from the water. Various kinds of water impurities are present in a colloidal form that will not settle. By combining all the colloidal particles in the flocculation process using a coagulant followed by sedimentation, colloidal separation occurs. Well, here is the role of the wastewater static mixer, which combines all colloidal particles in the process of flocculation.
